Is there a “validator” node for Ethereum?

Let me explain what I want to do: I have a decent, few years old desktop PC. I'm not interested in joining mining pools and receive very minimal payments, but is there a way to run a node that validates newly created blocks by recalculating the hashes, but not trying to create blocks myself?

Is that even beneficial to the network without hash power? (since in a dispute the faster growing chain will be accepted anyway). I just wanna help the network be more decentralized, but am I correct that without significant hash power there is not much point?

So far I downloaded Geth 1.8.3 for Windows, fast synced my client (blockchain size is about 20 GB), and tried out the mining, but I'm not a fan of the high CPU, RAM and disk usage to run this all day. Thanks for the help.
